Tip #125: Be The Change You Need To See In The World

Tip #125: To change the world, begin by changing yourself.

The why: This week was a hard week for humanity. Mudslides in Sierra Leone, violence in the Philippines, fascists in Charlottesville, terror attacks in Barcelona, Finland, and Russia.

Sometimes it feels like the whole world is spinning out of control, with no way of stopping it.

I know for me personally, a great overarching theme of my anxiety can be the absolute hopelessness and helplessness I feel at the current state of things. I sometimes sit for hours and try to think of solutions, figure out how we got to this terrible time and end up feeling deflated and worried.

A large part of this fear can be that there’s nothing I can do to stop it.

However, what we need to remember is that there is at least one thing in life that we can control.

We can control how we act towards others. The kindness we show, the care and compassion we give to our fellow human beings.

Yes, it’s true right now that the world has a lot of darkness in it. Yes, it’s true that we alone may not be enough to stop it all.

But it’s also true that we have within all of us a great power. A power for goodness. A power for light.

So long as there are people who are willing to change themselves for the better, inspire others, who will always be kind, always find ways to help, the dark things that happen can never take over the narrative of the human race. Not entirely.

If each of us vows to do one random act of kindness a day, whether that’s giving to a charity, giving food to a homeless person, holding a door open for someone, asking how someone is, imagine what a world we could create.

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, but it’s always possible.

By changing ourselves a little each and every day, we help shape and form the world around us to be a better place. A place we can be proud to call home.

We need to all do our bit to be the change we want to see in the world.
