Tip #13: When you feel you don’t have enough air in your lungs and need to yawn, try moving your jaw to the side.
The Why: Wow. This seems a weird one doesn’t it?
In truth, yes. It is a little. But it works.
When in the midst of a panic attack, you hyperventilate, which causes the rather terrifying sensation of not being able to breathe. In order to try to get more air into your lungs, your body may feel like it needs to yawn. A lot.
On the plus side, you will be able to perform a very convincing hippo impersonation.
Sometimes even when yawning it feels like you are not getting enough air in, which can make you panic even further.
What I began to do when experiencing this odd feeling is, when yawning, moving my mouth slightly to one side or the other. This action alters the direction that air is flowing in, causing it to flow easier down the windpipe, and restoring the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body.
One thing to remember is that no matter how scary the sensation is, it can’t kill you. Do the two-minute test, know it’s only anxiety, then move that mouth side to side.
