Tip #6: Adrenaline is often seen as the anxious person’s hubris. In fact, it could save your life one day.
The Why: Adrenaline is the chemical that causes your heart to begin racing, the tightness in your chest, the sweaty palms, the panic attack. These symptoms alas, are also the symptoms of a heart attack. Many people who have anxiety believe that they are suffering from the latter, which of course causes vast amounts of distress. You believe you’re dying, which fuels the panic even further, which exacerbates the symptoms, which makes you believe you’re dying ad infinitum.
However, one thing to know if you’re in the midst of a panic attack, and you think your heart is about to beat out of your chest, is that the adrenaline causing your symptoms, unless you have a pre-existing heart-condition, is not going to cause a heart attack. It’s for your survival. Adrenaline is in fact given to patients suffering from a heart attack to revive them.
So, although adrenaline may currently be causing you pain, it won’t harm you during a panic attack, no matter how real or awful it feels.
